We are looking for club members who are
willing to help with foster care for our rescue Scotties. There is
also the need for club members who are willing to help pick up and

Why We Need
Donations
Cost of running the program
Over the past three years, the club has spent an average of $3,200 per year to operate
our Scottie Rescue program. Because we have a required spay/neuter policy, a significant
portion of the costs involves veterinary expenses, including both pre- and post-operative
care. There have also been several dogs that required extensive medical care prior to
placement. To date, we have successfully treated three dogs for Heartworm infestations. We
have also performed extensive work-ups on dogs with Cushings Disease and liver problems.
We feel that it is definitely in the dog's best interest that we perform these treatments
prior to placing the dog and having the new owners try to deal with unexpected problems.
Another significant cost area is the telephone coordination required to operate the
program. Although some of these costs end up as donated services, the large burden of
return calls and actual placement calls are reimbursed at cost to the member performing
the service. We hope that some of these expenses can be reduced by using the services of
the Web and e-mail.
Placement fees
Our standard placement fee is $150 per dog. This fee is constant, regardless of the
cost of services that may have been provided for the dog. We occasionally end up spending
less than this, but typically we spend significantly more. Without donations, we would
probably need to double the placement fee to just break even on expenses.
Veterinary costs
We attempt to carefully control veterinary expenses, while insuring that no required
service is overlooked. We have been very lucky to work with several clinics that have been
offering us discounts on the fees for services. Most of these are the personal
veterinarians of club members that provide foster homes.
Types of donations accepted
Cash
We do welcome both cash and check donations. Checks should be made payable to
"STCNE," these funds are deposited in the Club's treasury and designated
specifically to support the rescue program. The club treasure will typically acknowledge
these donations with a thank you card.
Supplies
When the program was initially revised to include foster care we accepted donations of
supplies such as crates, grooming tools, leashes and toys. Although most of these supplies
are currently available, we would always welcome any additional donations.
Services
One of the biggest and most important services that any club member can offer is to
donate their time as a Scottie Rescue Foster Home. All of our rescue Scotties are kept in
a foster home for a period of about two weeks. During this time we evaluate the dog's
temperament, schedule any required veterinary procedures, and try to perform any cosmetic
alterations (grooming) that may help with the final placement.
Annual Auction
The feature event at recent Annual Banquets has been the auction. Scottie items of all
description have been brought to these meetings so that they can be auctioned. Proceeds
have been designated for the Rescue program, and have typically raised over $1,000 each
year.
